Conversation with the old timer Gary about tool offsets changed my mind

I was talking to Gary, the guy who's been running CNCs since the 80s, last Friday during lunch. He told me I was overthinking my tool offsets and just needed to trust the machine more. I always thought being super precise with every measurement was the only way, but he showed me how a tiny adjustment on the fly can save 15 minutes of setup time. Has anyone else found that being too careful actually slows them down?

Gary's right. Overthinking just makes your parts late for no reason.

Whoa hold on, I gotta push back on that. Overthinking gets a bad rap but half the time it's what saves you from a world of regret later. Rushing into a part choice just to get it on time and then finding out it doesn't fit right or breaks after a week is way more costly than waiting a couple extra days. I've seen people slap something together without checking the tolerances and then they're stuck fighting with it for an hour at the track. Sometimes a little overthinking means you only have to do the job once instead of three times. Not every delay is from overthinking either sometimes it's just bad ordering, but thinking things through is not the enemy here.

Crack a joke about my own overthinking habits here because honestly I'm the guy who triple checks the coolant level before every job. I once spent 45 minutes measuring a tool offset only to realize I had the wrong tool in the holder the whole time. Gary's right that trusting the machine sometimes saves a ton of headache, but I can't help feeling like my carefulness has saved my behind a few times too. Maybe the trick is knowing when to be a worrywart and when to just send it, because I've definitely been too slow on parts that didn't need all that fuss. I guess the machine doesn't care how long you stare at it, it just wants you to hit the green button already.
