I just realized I've said 'have a good one' to the same gas station clerk for 500 mornings

It started as a habit, but after hitting that number, I realized those two seconds of eye contact are the most consistent human interaction in my day.

My buddy had that with his old mailman. For years it was just a quick wave from the porch, maybe a "hot one today." Then the guy retired and a new person took the route. My friend said it felt weirdly sad, like losing a tiny piece of his week. Those little routines really do anchor you.

Yeah, that "tiny piece of his week" thing is so real. My friend had a barista who knew his order the second he walked in. She'd just start making it and they'd chat about her dog for a minute. She moved to a different city and he said the new coffee shop just feels quiet now, even with people in it. He didn't realize how much that tiny daily chat mattered.
