The one interview trick I picked up from a hiring manager in Chicago
I kept freezing up when they asked 'tell me about yourself' so I turned it into a 90 second story about a specific project at my old job in Cleveland. I started with the problem, what I did, and the result. It's like giving them a movie trailer instead of a boring list of skills. Anyone else try something like that for interviews?

Did a buddy try this and end up talking about his cat rescue story by accident?

Haha yeah that's basically me with everything. I'll try to tell someone about a new recipe I found and somehow end up explaining why my neighbor's dog absolutely hates squirrels.

Nah, people exaggerate this stuff way too much. You're probably just telling a normal story and someone else is making it weird by pointing out the tangents. Unless your recipe literally involves squirrel hunting with your neighbor's dog, I doubt it's that wild.
