That time my buddy canceled dinner and I ended up talking to his neighbor for 3 hours
I was supposed to meet my friend Dave at a BBQ joint downtown last Saturday but he bailed last minute because his kid got sick. I decided to grab a beer solo at the bar next door and this older guy sat down next to me. He told me he was a retired truck driver and he said something like "you waste the most time chasing the plans that don't happen." It hit me hard because I'd been stressing over a project at work that kept falling apart, and it made me rethink how much energy I put into things that are already gone. Has anyone else had a random stranger say something that just stuck with you?

Spit out my drink a little reading this because my wife's grandma once told me "you can't steer a parked car" while I was complaining about being stuck in a rut. Took me a solid year to realize she wasn't just talking about literal driving, she was telling me to stop overthinking everything and just move forward. Your truck driver buddy sounds like he's been around the block enough times to know what he's talking about, even if it stings at first.

Grandma's one-liner is gold, my dude. I had a boss who used to say "you can't steer a parked car" every time I'd get stuck on a decision (like which vendor to pick for a project). It took me maybe six months to realize it wasn't just a driving metaphor either. The trick I figured out is that even a bad decision gets you moving, and you can always course-correct once you're rolling. Your wife's grandma probably saw a lot of people waste years just sitting there, waiting for the perfect moment that never comes. So yeah, your truck driver buddy and her both know the same secret: forward momentum beats perfection every single time.
