Why does nobody talk about the cost of a proper dust collection system?

I spent about $2,500 last year on a full shop cyclone system with ducting. On one hand, it's a huge chunk of cash and the setup took a full weekend. On the other, my shop is cleaner, my lungs feel better, and I'm not spending an hour cleaning up after every major job. Some guys I know say a couple of good shop vacs are enough for a small operation. Others swear you need the big system from day one. For those who have made the jump, did the investment actually save you time and hassle, or do you regret not putting that money into other tools?

The hidden cost is in the cleanup time you don't see. A shop vac needs you to stop work, drag it over, hook it up, and empty it constantly. That mental break kills your flow on a project. The big system runs in the background like a fridge, so you just work. The time you get back isn't just an hour at the end, it's all the little moments that add up to finishing faster.

I get that, but for me the shop vac is part of the rhythm. The short break to empty it can actually help me spot a mistake or think through the next step.

Exactly, those forced pauses can refocus your brain. It's like the shop vac is a built-in timer for quality checks.
