Vent: My trademark search took three times longer than my lawyer said it would

I was told a simple trademark search for my new coffee shop name would take about two weeks. It actually took over six weeks because the lawyer found a similar name in a different state that was registered for a different class of goods. We had to get a full legal opinion on the risk of confusion, which cost an extra $800. I see a lot of people online saying you should always rush to file, but this made me think a slow, careful check is better. Has anyone else had a trademark search blow up like this?

Was it the same lawyer who gave the two week estimate? That's frustrating. A slow check is definitely worth it to avoid bigger problems later.

Two months? That's insane, markt23 wasn't kidding. A slow check is one thing, but that's a totally different ball game. Makes you wonder what "one more thing" actually means after all that time. Honestly, at that point the pigeon might be faster.

Oh, the same lawyer? Yeah, he's the one. Two weeks turned into two months of "just checking one more thing." At this point, I'm expecting the final report to arrive by carrier pigeon.
