Why does nobody mention the hidden fees in budget apps? My tracker just showed $18 in monthly charges

I signed up for a budgeting app last month in Denver to track my coffee spending, but after 4 weeks I found it quietly charging me for premium features I never used, anyone else catch sneaky fees like this and switch to a plain spreadsheet instead?

see @amy974 I get the frustration, but I actually had the opposite experience. The app caught a subscription I forgot about, the gym membership I never used, that was $40 a month, so it paid for itself in one week. Yeah the premium upsell is annoying, but you can just ignore it or pick the free version and turn off all the add on features. I use the free tier and it tracks my spending fine, no hidden charges because I checked the settings on day one. Different apps have different tricks, but a spreadsheet wont warn you when your streaming service jacks up the price. That $18 was a wake up call for you, but for me the alerts saved way more than the fee cost.

Paid $18 a month to learn I spend too much on iced lattes. That's a real kick in the gut. My spreadsheet just tells me the same thing for free, and it doesn't judge me with a cheerful notification. These apps are great at tracking your money until they quietly track some of it into their own pocket. Cancelled the subscription, kept the habit, and now my coffee guilt comes with zero extra fees. Honestly, a good old paper ledger never sent me a passive-aggressive upgrade prompt.
