That time I used a credit card as a shovel for my garden bed
I used to buy those expensive bagged soils from the big box store, like $8 a bag for the good stuff. Then last spring I got this wild idea to start a compost pile behind my garage. After three months of tossing in coffee grounds and eggshells, I had this dark, crumbly dirt that smelled like earth. I dug out a wheelbarrow full and spread it over my tomato patch instead of buying three bags of Miracle-Gro. It saved me about $25 that trip, and my plants went crazy. My neighbor, Bob, was like, "You actually made that?" and now he's got his own pile going. Anyone else get hooked on composting after swearing it was too much work?

and honestly the dirt from my pile has this weird bonus where it attracts more earthworms than i ever saw in those store bags. like last week i flipped a shovelful and found like six fat ones just wiggling around. but here's the thing that got me, i started throwing in shredded cardboard from packages and now my pile doesn't stink as bad. my son calls it my garbage volcano but he was the one who found a volunteer pumpkin vine sprouting out of it last september. we let it grow and got three mini pumpkins that were actually perfect for halloween. compost is like a surprise party you throw for your yard.

$8 a bag for soil? I almost choked on my coffee reading that. I remember paying $12 for those bags a few years back and thinking it was highway robbery. Composting really is the secret weapon for saving money and growing monster plants.
