The year I stopped booking hotels and started renting apartments on the edge of town

Used to pay $140 a night for a mediocre motel in downtown Nashville, then I spent $55 a night for a whole apartment 15 minutes out and cooked my own breakfast. Has anyone else found that staying just outside the tourist zone saves more than just cash?

The outskirts always have the real character anyway.

Turkeys just walking through the living room... that's wild. Like did they just waltz in and start pecking at the floor or what? I've seen deer stick their heads in a screen door before but a whole flock of turkeys crossing through the house like it's a public walkway is a whole different level of rural living. That's the kind of story you tell for years though... "remember when the turkeys used our house as a shortcut.

Got a friend who rented a place super cheap out in the sticks near a gravel pit. First week there, a whole flock of turkeys walked right through his living room because the door was open. He said it felt more like a wildlife documentary than a home. @miles_garcia totally nailed it about the real character out there, you just gotta be okay with sharing your space.
