Vent: Maybe it's just me, but repainting my whole kitchen didn't help my mood like everyone said it would.

I always heard that too, about a fresh coat of paint fixing a funk. I used to believe in those quick fixes. Then I spent a whole weekend painting my own living room a "cheerful" yellow and felt just as flat when I was done. It taught me that the mood has to come from inside, not from the walls.

A psychology blog I follow mentioned this exact thing last month. They said that home makeovers are often sold as mood boosters, but the effect wears off fast. I painted my bedroom a deep blue once, hoping for calm, and just felt sad in a new shade. It turns out you can't paint over a bad mood, you have to deal with it directly. Now I just accept that my walls will be ugly until I feel better.

Instead of a makeover, I forced myself to call a friend (even when I didn't want to). That connection did more for my mood than any new paint color ever could.
