That persistent taper on my lathe cuts was from a wobbly tool post
Tightening the bolts made them straight.

When you talked about the wobbly tool post, it reminded me of how often small, loose parts cause bigger issues. I've fixed countless squeaky doors and wobbly chairs just by tightening a screw or bolt. It's easy to assume something is broken when really it just needs a basic check. That lathe problem is a perfect example of a simple solution hiding in plain sight.

Hold on, @dianahayes, I get your point but going straight for the simple fix can backfire. Sometimes a wobbly part means something is actually broken, not just loose. I've had tools where tightening a bolt just hid a bigger issue like a worn gear or a crack. That quick fix might work for a while but then fail badly later. It's better to check properly instead of always assuming it's easy, lol. You could waste time or even make things worse if you don't look deeper.

Seriously, I see this all the time. My old drill press had a chuck that wobbled like crazy, and I was ready to buy a new one. But then I just tightened the mounting bolt and it ran perfectly straight. It's amazing how often the answer is right there with a basic tool. I've saved so much time and money just by checking the simple stuff first. Makes you feel like a genius for no reason, lol.
