Recently found my stain rags warming up in the bin

I put my used stain rags in a closed metal can after a refinishing job. The can got warm, and I read that oily rags can catch fire if not stored right. How do you handle solvent soaked rags to stay safe?

Yeah, oily rags are no joke. My cousin's garage almost went up from that.

Yikes, @the_jennifer, that's scary... A buddy of mine had a similar close call last summer. He left some stained rags in a plastic bucket after working on his car... forgot all about them. Next thing he knows, there's smoke pouring from his shed and the bucket was melted through. It really shows how fast that stuff can go wrong, just like with your cousin's garage. Makes you double check everything now...
