Question about using a hair dryer to speed up stain drying

I used to wait a full day for stain to dry before topcoating, but after a humid week in Savannah last July, I started using a hair dryer on low heat for 5 minutes and now I can seal in under an hour.

Man, my buddy tried that and totally fried his finish.

That's a solid trick for sure. I've found it works best with oil-based stains. Just keep the dryer moving and don't let it get too hot in one spot, or you can cook the stain and make it gummy. A cheap heat gun on the low setting gives you more control than a hair dryer. It's a total game changer for small projects when you're trying to finish in a single day.

Yeah, that heat gun tip is a lifesaver for sure. Read an old woodworking forum post that said the same thing, how moving too slow basically bakes the oil right into the wood. Makes total sense why @derek_perez's buddy had trouble. It's all about that low, even heat to push the extra stain out without setting it on fire. Lets you get a second coat on way faster without the sticky mess. Definitely beats waiting around for two days.
