Shoutout to the guy at the Portland flower market who told me he never uses floral foam anymore
He said he switched to chicken wire and moss for all his big installs about 8 months ago, and his stems stay fresher while he's not dumping plastic into a landfill, so has anyone else made that switch and noticed a real difference in vase life?

Wild! That totally reminds me of my friend who does flower crowns for festivals. She started using wet paper towel tubes wrapped in moss instead of foam bases, and she swears they don't crush as easily in a crowd and the baby's breath stays perky way longer. Makes sense, it's all about the stems getting water, right?

Oh nice, that's a solid tip. I bet the moss helps keep the humidity up around the stems too, which is a big deal.

Honestly, I was a floral foam die-hard for years. I thought the switch to chicken wire sounded like extra, fussy work for no real gain. But I tried it on a big wedding arch last fall, and the hydrangeas lasted a full two days longer without wilting. It was a total game-changer for me. Have you tried it with any specific flower types yet?
