Our furnace died the first night below freezing
It happened last Tuesday when the temp dropped to 28 degrees. The house was 55 degrees by morning. I called an emergency HVAC company and they found a cracked heat exchanger, a $2,800 fix we didn't budget for. Has anyone else had a major system fail right after moving in? How did you handle the cost?

That "first night below freezing" timing feels like more than just bad luck to me.

Right, @amy974? It's like your furnace saw the forecast and decided to quit on the worst possible day.

Look at it this way, a furnace is just a machine with parts that wear out. It doesn't know the weather forecast. The cold snap probably just pushed an already weak part to finally break, which honestly saved you from a potential carbon monoxide leak later on.
