Just watched a crew in my neighborhood set posts without checking for utilities first

They were digging for a vinyl fence and I saw their auger get within maybe 6 inches of the marked gas line, which is way too close for comfort. I mean, one wrong move and you're calling 911, not to mention the fines. Do you guys always call 811 even for what seems like a simple residential job?

My old neighbor in Ohio hit a fiber optic line putting in a mailbox. The repair bill from the telecom company was over fifteen thousand dollars. That's the real hidden cost a lot of DIY folks don't think about, because 811 only marks public utilities. You're still on the hook for any private lines you slice.

Saw a story about someone hitting a gas line last year.

My buddy cut his own cable line digging a fire pit, cost him almost two grand to fix.

Yeah @the_linda, that's brutal. My friend's crew hit a sprinkler line they didn't know about and flooded a basement. The water damage bill made that cable fix look cheap. Some stuff just isn't on any map.
