Tried a new hoof knife sharpening method from a clinic in Boise

I used to just use a basic whetstone, but the instructor showed us how to use a leather strop with compound after each pass. The edge held up way better through a full day of trimming six horses last week. What's your go-to way to keep your knives sharp?

Leather strop? I just run mine over a cinder block in the barn. Works great if you like your knives shaped like spoons.

My uncle once sharpened his hunting knife on the concrete curb in his driveway. He was so proud until he tried to skin a deer and the blade just slid off like it was afraid of the animal.

My buddy tried something like that after hearing @harper_foster's cinder block method. He used a brick paver on his good chef's knife. It took him twenty minutes of grinding to realize he'd basically made a very expensive, very dull butter knife.
