I finally calmed a horse that hated the nippers

This gelding would flinch hard whenever I brought out the nippers for his hoof trim. I started tapping the tool lightly on my palm near him first, so the sound wasn't a surprise, and he settled right down. How do you help horses get used to specific tools?

Sounds smart to get them used to the noise first. My old farrier would just let the horse sniff and look at the tools before starting, which worked pretty well. Going straight in seems like a good way to keep a horse on edge.

Friend's colt spooked at nippers. He tapped them on wood first, not like @emma_dixon70's farrier.
