Bought a $250 anvil off Craigslist and it had a hidden crack
I thought I scored big on a 150-pound Peter Wright anvil for cheap, but after the first session the ring told me something was off. Took a magnifying glass to it and found a hairline fracture running through the heel. Has anyone else dealt with trying to get their money back from a shady private seller?

Oh, that's a real shame. I actually read somewhere that a lot of those old anvils can hide cracks under layers of rust or paint. Some folks say you can test them with a simple tap test and a straight edge before you hand over the cash.

47 bucks I wasted on a "vintage" drill press from an estate sale last year. Guy swore it ran perfect. Got it home, belt was shredded and the chuck wobbled like a drunk sailor. Called the number he left, straight to voicemail. People will hide anything to make a quick sale. Rust and paint are basically lies waiting to happen with old tools.

A crack that small really gonna kill the anvil? Sounds like you could still use the face and the horn just fine for most work. People get way too dramatic about a hairline in the heel. Maybe just weld it up, grind it down, and keep hammering. But hey, if you really think the seller knew about it, good luck getting cash back from a random Craigslist guy who probably blocked your number already.
