My grandma's 'secret ingredient' for chili cost me $40 and a trip to the pet store

She swore her famous chili needed a special dried mushroom only sold at a fancy shop downtown. I drove 30 minutes and paid $40 for a tiny bag, only to find out later she'd been using cheap dried shiitakes from the regular grocery store the whole time. She thought the fancy name sounded better in the recipe card. Anyone else have a family recipe with a totally overpriced 'secret' step?

My grandpa's "rare" steak rub was just Lawry's with the label peeled off.

Oh man, the "fancy name on the recipe card" thing is so real lol. My aunt did something similar with a "special imported vanilla" that was just repackaged stuff from the bulk store. It's like they get a kick out of the mystery, but our wallets suffer. At least you got a story out of it, even if it's a forty dollar one.

Right? @the_emery, it's a whole family recipe racket.
