A job in a 1970s high rise in Chicago made me rethink every safety check.
We were replacing a governor rope on a 15-story traction unit, and the old rope had worn a groove into the sheave that was almost invisible. My partner went to test the overspeed and the car just... hesitated. The boss looked at me and said, 'You see that? That's why we check the sheave first, every single time.' How many of you guys have a set order for your pre-work checks now?

My checklist is laminated and taped to my toolbox lid.

Overkill, but I respect it.

Lamination is the only way my checklists survive a real shop floor. I go through about three a year from grease and solvent spills. The tape just gives the grime a place to build up around the edges. A clear sheet protector works better, you can pull the paper out and wipe the plastic clean.
