Just checked my local Audubon data and winter finch sightings dropped 40% in one season near me

I was browsing the Cornell Lab feeder watch maps last night and saw that pine siskin counts in my county went from 87 to 52 between December and January, has anyone else noticed fewer irruptive finches this year?

Didn't those big box stores stop selling thistle seed last fall, or am I misremembering?

Oh yeah you're totally right about the big box stores! I remember last fall I went to two different ones and they both had empty shelves where the thistle seed used to be. The guy at customer service told me they stopped carrying it entirely, something about supply chain issues and a shift in what they wanted to stock. I was so annoyed because I have a whole flock of goldfinches that go crazy for that stuff, and I had to drive across town to a bird supply store just to find any. It's like they just decided overnight that bird lovers don't need it anymore. I swear, every fall something disappears from those stores and we're left scrambling to find basics.

Huh, I actually thought it was seed supply too. You might be right.
