That old timer at the yard made me rethink my whole approach on cutter heads

I was swapping out a cutter head on the 12-inch at the yard last Tuesday and this retired guy starts talking about how he never ran his pumps past 70% throttle. He said most guys burn up their seals by pushing it full bore all the time, and after 18 years I never once thought about backing off. Any of you guys run your pumps at partial throttle or is he just old school?

Admit I never gave it much thought either, always figured full throttle was the way to go. This guy makes a solid point though, now I'm wondering how many seals I've cooked over the years without realizing it.

Wait, "how many seals I've cooked" is actually something you're worried about? That's wild lmao. I've been running my boat wide open for like 5 years now and it never even crossed my mind that the prop wash could hurt anything besides maybe stirring up some mud. Now I'm picturing all those bass I've scared off with my wake and feeling kinda dumb about it lol.

Wow, that reminds me of my uncle who swore by running his truck on a quarter tank to save weight (he blew two fuel pumps before he figured it out).
