Had a real scare with the cutter head last Tuesday...

We were pulling up old river gravel near the old mill site, about 8 feet down. The whole rig started shaking like crazy, and the pressure gauge spiked past 180 psi. Shut it down quick and found a huge chunk of steel beam, maybe 4 feet long, jammed right in the teeth. Must have been down there for 50 years. If we'd kept pushing, we would have torn up the drive shaft for sure. Anyone else hit something that big in a spot that was supposed to be clear?

Tell me about it. Hit a buried concrete septic tank once that wasnt on any map. Whole machine jumped like it was alive. Thought we snapped the auger for sure. That old steel beam sounds nasty, glad you caught it in time. Some of the stuff hiding underground is just wild.

Almost dropped my coffee when we hit a gas line last month, @jennifer_jenkins. My own fault for trusting a map from the 70s.

Read about a crew hitting an old train axle under a cornfield once.
