Framed out a closet in my garage last weekend, still shocked at the cost of lumber

I built a 4x8 storage closet in my garage near Dayton, Ohio to get all my tools off the floor. The 2x4s alone cost me $87 at the local lumber yard even with the prices dropping a bit. My cuts were off by almost a half inch on one wall and I had to shim it like crazy. Anybody else find that building a simple rectangle turns into a geometry puzzle?

$87 for a 4x8 closet? Man I built a simple shelf last month and my 2x4s cost more than that. My cuts were off by a full inch on one side so I ended up with a shelf that looks like it was designed by a drunk architect. Had to stuff a bunch of scrap wood in there to make it level. At least the tools fit even if the geometry doesn't.

Tell @lee_reed his shelf design sounds like a modern art masterpiece, even if it's crooked.

Used to think bad work was just bad, but you changed my mind on that.
