My instructor at the trade school said 'a clean shop is a safe shop,' but the best mechanic I know works out of a bay that looks like a bomb went off. What's the real deal?

A bomb went off is putting it lightly lol. The best guy I ever knew for transmissions worked in total chaos, tools everywhere. But he also never tripped over anything because he knew exactly where every socket was in that mess. I guess the rule is more about knowing your own system, clean or not.

Totally get that. My old shop teacher had a bench that looked like a disaster zone, but he could grab any tool blindfolded. The real trick was his "organized chaos" system where nothing ever left his main work area. It only looked messy to outsiders.

Exactly like @derek_perez said, my dad's garage was pure chaos but he could find anything in seconds.
