That $50 retractable leash I bought from PetSmart lasted 3 walks before the cord snapped

Idk if it was just mine but the plastic housing cracked on day 2 and then the cord frayed and broke on day 3 when my 60lb lab lunged after a squirrel. Has anyone else had better luck with those heavy duty nylon leashes instead?

Hate that for you. Same exact thing happened with my last retractable leash from there. @miles_garcia makes a solid point about the nylon leashes being way more dependable. The cord ones are just not built for dogs that actually pull or lunge. I learned the hard way too when my dog went after a rabbit and the plastic housing cracked on impact. Switched to a simple six foot flat leash and haven't looked back since.

How many of us have been that person sprinting after their dog in the park holding a broken plastic handle? I swear my dog picked up on the weakness of retractable leashes through some kind of canine telepathy. Now I've got a heavy duty nylon one with a grip that could survive a tug of war with a small horse.

Those retractable leashes are honestly kind of a gamble in my experience. The cord ones especially don't hold up well past 30-40 pounds if your dog pulls hard. I switched to a 6 foot nylon leash from a local pet store for like $15 and it's lasted over a year with my 70 pound lab mix. Your mileage may vary but the heavy duty ones with the padded handle have been way more durable for me than anything with a thin cord or plastic parts.
