Just realized my old route through the tunnel was a ticking time bomb for traffic

Used to take I-5 through downtown every morning until a 6 car pileup on the bridge last Thursday added 45 minutes to my drive, now I go the long way around through the industrial district and haven't been late once since, has anyone else found a weird backroad that just works better?

Actually I think there might be a mix-up on the timeline. That new tunnel opened maybe 18 months ago, not quite two years yet. I remember because they had that big ribbon cutting ceremony right before the holidays last year. As for the ventilation issue, I read that was a separate thing from a different project up north. The bridge pileup you mentioned is no joke though. I've been taking surface streets through the old warehouse district for a few weeks now and it shaves off about 10 minutes even with stoplights. Kind of funny how the most obvious route ends up being the worst one during rush hour.

Two years ago and they're already having issues that require it to close down completely? Yeah that checks out for a major public infrastructure project around here. Wasn't there something about the ventilation system failing during testing last month or am I mixing that up with something else? Kind of makes you wonder what other problems they found that they're not telling us about yet.
