Unpopular opinion: I used to ignore update prompts until a nearby shop got locked out

I always clicked 'remind me later' on software updates thinking they were just minor fixes. Last month, a bakery two blocks from me got hit with ransomware after not installing a security patch. The owners lost access to all their order records and had to scramble to recover. Seeing their panic made me understand that updates close gaps hackers use. Now I set my phone and computer to update automatically overnight. I shared this story at our community board meeting to spread the word. Taking a minute to update can really protect your stuff from attacks.

I read about that Microsoft Exchange hack last year where over 30,000 organizations in the US got compromised through an unpatched server. It made the news for weeks. My cousin runs a small bike shop and he said his old point of sale system was vulnerable for months before he finally let it update. It's so easy to just keep clicking "later" and forget. Stories like your bakery are what finally make it click for people, that it's not just some far off tech problem. It happens right down the street.

Ugh YES and nobody talks about how updates can feel like a HOSTILE takeover when you're not techy. My aunt's flower shop lost a whole morning because the new "secure" system made her reset every password and she had them all on a sticky note. It's not just laziness, sometimes the fix feels worse than the risk until it's too late.

Right, @joel_hall17. We delay fixes till they're emergencies.
