Trying to find a single missing piece for my vintage board game collection turned into a two-year hunt

I collect old board games from the 70s and 80s, and my Monopoly set from 1978 was missing one tiny metal thimble token. I figured I could just find a spare online, but NO. It took checking over a dozen thrift stores, three online auction sites, and finally a trade with a collector in Ohio to get the exact piece. What should have been a quick fix became my whole obsession. Do you think it's better to keep a collection perfectly complete, or is an authentic missing piece part of its story?

That hunt sounds so familiar, it's the worst when a simple piece goes missing. Honestly, a complete set feels so much better to me. Finding that exact 1978 thimble must have been a huge relief, like finally solving a puzzle. The story is cool, but having it all together is the real win.

It's like that with so many things now. My old car needed one specific plastic clip for the door panel, and searching for it felt ridiculous. We're surrounded by stuff designed to be complete, so a single missing piece throws the whole system off.

My buddy spent months tracking down a single Lego piece for his old Millennium Falcon.
