That $60 monitor arm almost ruined my entire desk

Picked up one of those cheap gas spring arms off Amazon to save some cash. Worked fine for about three months until the tension gave out and my monitor dropped straight onto my keyboard. Scratched the screen and snapped two keycaps. Anyone have a recommendation for a budget arm that actually holds up past the return window?

Wait, I actually see it a little different than @dianahayes. I've had a couple of those cheap Amazon arms and honestly my $40 one is still going strong after two years with a heavy ultrawide on it. Sometimes you just get a bad batch or maybe your monitor is too heavy for the rating they put on the listing.

People act like a monitor arm failing is a life or death situation. Is it really that big of a deal if you have to tighten a screw every few months? I've had the same $30 arm for three years now and it's still holding a 32 inch screen without any issues. Maybe you just got a Monday batch or something. Honestly most of the complaints I see are from people who probably overtightened something and cracked the plastic. Not saying cheap arms are perfect, but the panic over them is a little dramatic.

Worked fine for about three months" is exactly what happened to me too. Those cheap gas arms are such a gamble, they either last forever or die right after the return window. I'd say save up for a Vivo or a used Amazon Basics arm if you want actual durability.
