My grandma swore by a flat pillow, tried it and woke up with a crick in my neck for a week

So my grandma has always said that thick, fluffy pillows are a scam and a flat one is better for your spine. She gave me this old feather pillow that's basically pancaked from decades of use. I figured she's been alive for 90 years so she must know something I don't. First night it felt okay, like sleeping on a folded towel. But by day three I woke up with my neck locked to the left and had to call out of work because I couldn't turn my head. Turns out my shoulders are way broader than hers and I need like 4-5 inches of loft to keep my head straight. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from an older relative about sleep setup and regretted following it?

Did she give you any reasoning for why flat pillows are better, or was it more of a “trust me, kid” situation?

Honestly yeah, switching to a flatter pillow totally fixed my neck pain.

My own flat pillow phase ended with a text to my boss that said "stuck in triangle position.
