Old timer at the shop swore by thermal paste spread method
Back in 2018, a retired Dell tech told me to spread paste in a thin layer, not just drop a pea. I thought he was crazy, but after trying it on a dozen Optiplex rebuilds, I never saw another thermal throttle issue. Has anyone else had an old-school trick that actually worked out better than the modern way?

Is a few degrees really worth the extra effort though lol

Eh I kind of get where you're coming from. A couple degrees usually isn't worth losing sleep over unless you're dealing with something super sensitive. Most stuff handles a little heat just fine.

Stick with what works even if it looks fussy on paper. That's the thing about old school tricks, they come from people who had to fix stuff without fancy tools or quick fixes. I see it all the time with my uncle who still sets his oven timer with a windup knob instead of the digital one. It's just a few degrees difference sure, but those few degrees add up over the life of a fan or a hard drive or whatever. People who never deal with the little failures think it's overkill, but the guys who have cleaned up after a thousand cheap fixes know better. Sometimes the extra effort is less about the moment and more about not having to do it again next year.
