Recently on a reef cleanup, we had to choose between the contract and the local marine life. Still bugs me.

That contract choice is always gonna suck. They make you pick money over doing the actual right thing. Just a bad system all around.

Faithl71 has a point about contracts giving clear structure. I read a piece last month about how some new cleanup grants now build in buffers for unexpected wildlife finds. It seems like the best contracts try to plan for the hard calls.

Contracts exist for a reason, to get a clear job done on time and on budget. Without that structure, every cleanup would drown in debates over what counts as "right" and nothing would get finished. Sometimes you just have to follow the agreed terms, even when it feels bad.
