Gulf of Mexico vis debate: 5ft max vs 30ft plus, what's your call?

I was diving on a platform off Louisiana last week and could barely see my hand in front of my face, but the guy next to me said he's had crystal clear 30ft vis on the same rig in March. Do you guys think it's worth waiting for seasonal shifts or do you just roll with whatever the water gives you that day?

March runoff is definitely the culprit I've seen 20ft vis in April after a dry week.

Barely see my hand" makes me think it's more about runoff than the time of year honestly.

Did your buddy see any fish surfacing before the water got that dirty? I had a friend who went out on the Coast Fork last spring after a storm, and he said the water looked like chocolate milk but the steelhead were still biting right along the edge. He figured they were hugging the bank where the runoff wasn't so bad, so maybe it's not always a dealbreaker.
