Appreciation post: Overheard a guy at the convention in Atlanta say 'collecting is about the story, not the slab' and it really stuck with me.
Honestly, I was in line for a signature and this older collector was telling a younger kid that he'd rather have a beat-up copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 he could actually read than a perfect 9.8 sealed in plastic, which made me think about why I got into comics in the first place.

Tbh I get the idea, but for me the slab is part of the story now. That perfect 9.8 represents hunting it down for years and finally getting a clean copy, it's a trophy of the chase. The story is in the finding, not just the reading.

Honestly never saw it that way before, @val_williams. I was always in the "crack it open and read it" camp. But you're right, the hunt is a huge part of it. That slab is like proof you won after looking for so long. Makes me look at my own graded books a bit differently now.

Wait, you hunted for a single book for years?
