Watching a guy in the Portland cafe today, I finally understood why I always felt rushed writing in my journal.

For years I'd scribble in a cheap notebook at home, trying to force a full page, but seeing him just add three lines to a worn leather book over his espresso made me buy a Moleskine and now I only write when something actually happens, like the barista remembering my order yesterday.

Was it the leather book that did it for you? I used to carry a massive sketchbook everywhere, trying to fill a page each day. Now I just have a little notepad in my back pocket for when I see a weird fence design or a bird on a wire.

My friend lost his whole novel on a bus once.

Wait, the barista remembered your order? That never happens to me, they always look at me like I'm a new person. Maybe I need to go out more.
