Tried talking to the barista at the shop on Elm Street and got a whole new perspective on my coffee order

I usually just nod and grab my black drip coffee, but last Tuesday I asked the barista what she was brewing and she walked me through a single-origin from Colombia that tasted totally different. Took 2 extra minutes and now I actually notice the flavor notes. Anyone else ever break their coffee shop routine and get surprised?

Stood there for five minutes nodding about her cat while my latte got cold, but honestly that was the best coffee chat I've had in months. My usual routine is basically just grunting at people.

Not gonna lie I used to think all coffee tasted the same until I finally let this one barista explain why she switched beans. She said it's like comparing a grocery store tomato to one from a farmers market just totally different levels of care and flavor. Now I actually ask what they're pouring and sometimes it changes my whole mood for the shift. Small talk with strangers can unlock stuff you didn't even know was missing.

I asked the barista at Third Street what roast was best and ended up talking about her cat for ten minutes.
