This customer at my shop in Asheville asked for a 'tree bark roast'

Honestly, he was dead serious and described it as 'dark, earthy, with notes of forest floor'. Ngl, I just poured him a French press of our darkest Sumatran and he loved it. Has anyone else had a request that made you pause for a second?

Reminds me of a story my friend told me. A woman came into her cafe and asked for a coffee that tasted like "old books and regret." She was completely serious, staring right at her. My friend was stumped for a minute. She ended up mixing a tiny bit of cocoa powder into a very dark roast. The customer took a sip, got this sad little smile, and said it was exactly right.

Oh man, that's a great one. I had a guy come in once and ask for a coffee that tasted "like a rainy Tuesday in a city he'd never visited." He was not joking at all. I stood there blinking for a solid ten seconds. I ended up giving him a cup with a tiny bit of chicory in it, and he said it was perfect. Some people just have a whole different way of talking about flavor.

Wow, that rainy Tuesday story from jamesf41 is something else. It makes me think of the time a customer described their perfect tea as "the feeling of finding a five dollar bill in a winter coat pocket." I just stared at the canisters. Ended up giving them a black tea with a tiny pinch of orange peel. They said it was spot on. People's brains just work in these amazing, weird ways.
