The switch from bottomless portafilter to a spouted one changed my mornings
For about 3 years I pulled every shot with a bottomless portafilter, watching for channeling and spraying like it was some kind of science experiment. Then I got a cheap spouted one at a garage sale in Portland last spring and honestly, I stopped obsessing over every tiny imperfection. The taste is the same, my counter stays cleaner, and I actually drink my coffee instead of filming it for slow motion analysis. Has anyone else gone backwards on gear and felt more relaxed about their routine?

Oh man, this hits so close to home lol. I did the same thing with my sewing machine, spent months obsessing over perfect stitches and tension settings, then switched to an older basic model and suddenly I was actually finishing projects instead of just redoing seams. It's like once the gear stops being the center of attention, the hobby becomes fun again. Same thing happened with my friend and his fishing rod, he had this crazy expensive setup and never caught anything because he was always adjusting it. The cheap one he got at a yard sale? He's out there every weekend now just enjoying the lake. There's something about simpler tools that just lets you enjoy the actual thing instead of the equipment.
