Found a weird trick for chatter on thin wall aluminum parts

Kept getting a nasty finish on some 6061 brackets with 0.040" walls. Tried slowing the feed and increasing coolant, but it still sang. On a hunch, I wrapped a single layer of electrical tape around the part of the collet that grips the tool holder shank, just to dampen vibration. Chatter dropped by about 70%. Anyone else try something this janky that actually worked?

Wrapping tape on a collet sounds like a band-aid fix for a real problem. You're just masking a symptom like tool runout or a worn holder. That trick could fail in a bad way and wreck your setup.

Damn, I thought that too until it saved my part.

How bad can a bit of tape be, @nancy817?
