Am I the only one who thought you had to call a pro for every little furnace noise?

Our unit in my Tremont duplex started making a loud hum last Tuesday, and I was sure it was a $300 service call. I watched a video from a local HVAC guy, turned off the power, and just tightened the panel screws that had worked loose from vibration. It's been quiet for a week now. How many other 'big' problems are actually just simple fixes we're scared to try?

My old furnace used to sound like a dying robot every winter. I paid for two service calls before realizing the noise was just a loose bolt on the blower door. The guy probably laughed all the way to the bank. We get spooked because it's a big, expensive looking box, but half the time it just needs a basic tweak. I'm all for calling pros for real issues, but a quick online search has saved me a ton of cash.

Totally agree with @faith_king. We get scared of the big metal box. A lot of it is just basic stuff.

Man, @faith_king is right, my dryer sounded like a jet until I pulled a sock from the vent.
