My boss insists a 6-inch brush is fine for every flue, but a 14x14 clay liner in an old house on Elm Street took me 4 hours to clean properly with it.

Has anyone else found that one-size-fits-all tools just don't cut it on certain jobs?

Tell your boss to try cleaning that flue himself with a toothbrush and see how he likes it. Some jobs just need the right tool, and a six inch brush in a big clay liner is like using a spoon to dig a ditch. Sounds like your boss has never actually had to do the work, just likes to buy one of everything to save a few bucks. That four hour struggle is exactly why my truck has about eight different brushes rattling around in the back.

Right tool makes all the difference. My first year cleaning I tried to use a regular mop on a huge warehouse floor. Took me forever, looked terrible. Learned that lesson fast. @the_nathan has it right with the truck full of brushes. Bosses who never did the work just don't get it. They see a brush and think "close enough.

Kellys78's mop story shows why bosses who haven't done the work miss these details.
