Stranger at the dog park told me my leash technique was wrong

Some guy at Riverside Park said I was holding the leash too tight and confusing my dog. I was skeptical but tried his looser grip method, and sure enough my dog stopped pulling within 3 days. Anyone else get unsolicited advice that actually worked?

Well shoot, I gotta disagree with the whole crowd here... That guy had no business butting into your walk. What works for one dog and owner combo ain't gonna work for another, and @lindal13's point about standing there frozen just sounds like a recipe for getting tangled up in your own leash to me. Most unsolicited advice at dog parks is just noise from people who think their way is the only way.

My friend Jenna got told by some old guy at the park that she was walking her golden retriever wrong. She nearly snapped at him but tried his suggestion to stop every time the dog pulled and wait for eye contact. Two weeks later her walks went from a tug-of-war to a calm stroll (she still hates admitting he was right).

Stop every time the dog pulled" makes it sound like they just stood there frozen, not walking backwards.
