Rant: The dude at the coffee shop who ruined my whole morning vibe

I go to this spot on 5th street every Tuesday for a latte. Some guy just walks up to the counter and starts telling the barista this super long story about his ex, like she had no choice but to listen. Took him a good 5 minutes while I stood there waiting to order. The before and after was wild for me. Before I was chill and ready for my day. After I was all annoyed and my coffee felt rushed. Has anyone else dealt with a stranger just taking over a whole conversation like that?

Honestly that sounds SUPER frustrating, but I gotta point something out. The barista could have just asked the guy to hold on a second while she took your order. That's like Rule Number 1 of customer service. You said she just stood there and listened, right? She could have politely said "Hey, one moment" and taken your order first before letting him ramble. The whole vibe falls apart when both the customer and the worker enable the nonsense. You got rushed because the barista let the flow go all weird, not just because of the dude. Next time, maybe just say "Excuse me, I just need to order real quick" and see what happens.

I gotta ask though, is this really "ruining your whole morning vibe"? I mean, the guy was annoying for sure, no argument there. But like, does a 5 minute delay at a coffee shop really have that much power over your day? In my experience, things like this are more of a minor blip than a full on mood killer. I get it if you were in a hurry or something, but if you had time to stand there and stew about it, maybe the vibe was already a little fragile.

Wait, has no one else ever had a coffee shop moment where the whole thing just snowballs? Its like, the guy was annoying, the barista didnt handle it great, and suddenly you're standing there feeling all rushed and frustrated. I had this one time where a guy was literally telling the barista his entire life story while I just needed a black coffee. It wasn't even the delay that got me, it was the feeling of being invisible. You start thinking about how your whole morning is just going to be a fight for basic politeness, and yeah, that can totally kill your vibe. So I get it, sometimes its not just about the 5 minutes, its about the whole energy shift.
