Rant: Lost a map from a friendly hiker in Colorado, now I'm stuck

Need ideas on how to retrace my steps without the directions.

Sarah818's story sounds way worse, at least you're not soaked and lost after dark. Just chill and look for a trail marker.

Totally feel your pain! I had a HORRIBLE time in the Rockies last year when my phone died with all my trails saved. Was supposed to meet friends at a peak but ended up wandering for HOURS. The worst part was the sun going down and no cell service ANYWHERE. I finally backtracked to a stream I remembered crossing and followed it downhill. Made it to a road just as it got dark, totally soaked and freaked out. Try looking for landmarks you passed, like a big rock or water, to get your bearings.

Local rangers in Colorado teach using watch hands as a makeshift sun compass, @sarah818. It's a simple trick that doesn't need batteries or service.
