Finally realized carpet padding thickness matters way more than I thought

Tbh I used to just grab whatever padding was cheapest but last month on a job in Austin the homeowner requested 8lb pad and the difference in feel was insane. Anyone else notice how much better a job feels with the right pad underneath?

Notice how everything's built to fall apart now? My $20 yoga mat from Target lasted 3 months before it started flaking. Same with garden hoses, phone chargers, even my toaster died after 18 months. They plan it that way, make 'em just good enough to outlast the return window then watch 'em crumble.
