Serious question, my old manager told me to never negotiate salary on my first offer.
He said it would make me look greedy and they might pull the offer. So when I got a job offer in Austin for $65,000, I just accepted it. Found out six months later a coworker with the same role started at $72,000 after he asked for more. I feel like I left a lot of money on the table because of that advice. Has anyone else been given bad advice about salary talks?

My buddy got the same bad advice and lost out on thousands. He accepted a lowball offer without pushing back, and it set his pay low for years. That kind of advice only helps the company, not you.

I mean, always counter once, even if it's just a small bump.

Yeah, "set his pay low for years" is the scary part. I used to think you should just be grateful for any offer. Seeing stuff like this makes me realize starting low can really trap you.
