My old habit of saying "yes" to every side project cost me 11 months of evenings
I used to grab any extra task my manager threw at me to look like a team player, but after I burned out last spring and started saying "no" to anything outside my core role, my actual work quality improved so fast that I got a raise in 4 months, so has anyone else found that setting clear boundaries with your boss actually boosts your career more than being the "helpful" one?

Didn't we all grow up believing that saying yes is the only way to get ahead? I used to be exactly like you, I thought every extra task was a ticket to the next promotion. Honestly, it took me a full year of feeling miserable and doing average work to finally snap out of it. Once I started turning down the stuff that wasn't mine, I had more time to actually polish what mattered. Now I'm not saying to be lazy, but I am saying that your boss respects someone who knows their limits more than a doormat. The raise you got just proves that focusing on your real job beats collecting busywork every time.
