My big plan to switch to project management crashed hard last quarter

I spent about $2,000 on a certification course and told my boss I was ready for a new role. The problem was, everyone says you need to be a 'people person' to lead projects, but I think that's overrated. I'm good with details and systems, not hand-holding. They gave me a trial run on a software update, and the team just didn't follow the schedule I made. I stuck to the plan, but the project missed its deadline by two weeks. Has anyone moved into management without being super outgoing? What actually worked?

Ouch, that's a rough spot to be in. Honestly, my cousin tried the same career jump and had a similar meltdown over a kitchen remodel plan. He's super quiet but great with numbers, right? He made this perfect timeline, but his contractor just did things out of order for "logistical reasons." Makes you wonder if being loud really matters, or if some people just won't follow a plan unless they helped make it.

Yeah but the loud thing is a red herring. Your cousin's contractor didn't listen because he saw himself as the expert, not because your cousin was quiet. Some trades just have their own way of doing things and any plan from the client, loud or quiet, gets ignored. It's less about volume and more about control. The real trick is finding someone who respects the plan you paid them to follow.

Try herding cats with a spreadsheet and see how far your perfect plan gets you.
